In the image raster and vector layers in QGIS SIG open source, used as a graphical user interface for GRASS.
A Geographic Information System (GIS or GIS, its acronym in English) is an organizational integration of hardware, software and geographic data designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze and display all forms referenced geographic information in order to solve complex problems of planning and management. It can also be defined as a standard part of the story referred to a ground coordinate system and built to meet specific information needs. In the strictest sense, is any information system able to integrate, store, edit, analyze, share and display geographically referenced information. In a generic sense, GIS are tools that allow users to create interactive queries, analyze spatial information, edit data, maps and present the results of all these operations.
An example of using layers in a GIS application. In this example the layer of forest cover (in green) is located at the bottom, followed by coating with TOPOGRAPHIC lines. Below the layer with the drainage network and then the layer of administrative boundaries. GIS in the order of superposition of the information is very important to obtain the correct final map visualization. Note that the layer that contains the sheets of water is just below the rivers, so that a flow line may be covered by one of the ponds.
The technology of Geographic Information Systems can be used for scientific research, resources management, asset management, archeology, environmental impact assessment, urban planning, cartography, sociology, historical geography, marketing The logistics to name a few. For example, a GIS could allow groups to easily calculate emergency response times in case of a natural disaster, GIS can be used to find wetlands that need protection from pollution, or may be used by a company to locate a new business and take advantage of a market with little competition.
