Sterling area sterling area or refers to a group of countries, often former dominions and colonies of the British Empire (and the British Commonwealth of Nations) that use the pound sterling as its currency, or fix their currency to the British Pound Sterling to 1:1.
The area once included virtually the entire British Empire and many other countries. The rise of the United States, the economic effects of two world wars and the decline of the British Empire change the position of sterling in the world and the desire of countries to use. Currently the area includes only British territories.
